Thor (Old Norse: Þórr) is the god of thunder and strength, son of Odin and Jörð (the personification of Earth). He is the mightiest of the Aesir and the primary protector of gods and humans against giants and monsters. With his hammer Mjölnir he summons thunder and lightning and strikes down his enemies. Thor also possesses iron gauntlets (Járngreipr) and a belt of strength (Megingjörð) that doubles his already formidable power. He dwells in Bilskirnir in Þrúðvangr, said to have 540 rooms. Thor is married to Sif and is the father of Þrúðr, Magni, and Móði. He is renowned for his fierce temper and boundless strength, but also for his fundamental goodness as defender of the common people.
