Sigyn — God

Sigyn

God

The Æsir

Loki's faithful wife — holds a bowl over him to catch the venom dripping onto his face in his prison.

Sigyn (Old Norse: Sigyn) is Loki's wife and the mother of Narfi and Nari. She is a symbol of unconditional marital loyalty. After Loki was punished and bound in a cave — with a serpent fastened above his face, dripping venom — Sigyn sits beside him holding a bowl to catch the poison. When the bowl is full and she must leave to empty it, the venom falls on Loki, and his writhing in pain is said to cause earthquakes. Sigyn is described as among the wisest of goddesses.
