Names & Heiti

Rán
Rán (Old Norse: Rán) is Ægir's wife and goddess of the sea and drowning. She is known for catching sailors who drown with a great net. It was said that sailors who carried gold on their persons fared well in Rán's hall — hence the custom of carrying gold aboard ships. Rán and Ægir have nine daughters representing nine types of waves: Himinglæva, Dúfa, Blóðughadda, Hefring, Uðr, Hrönn, Bylgja, Dröfn, and Kólga. Rán is not evil in the traditional sense, but as relentless as the sea itself.
