Names & Heiti

Hel
Hel (Old Norse: Hel) is the daughter of Loki and Angrboða. Odin cast her down into Niflheim and gave her dominion over all the dead — those who did not die in battle. Half of her body is living and flesh-colored, the other half is pale as a corpse — a visible mark of her dual nature. Her hall is called Éljúðnir ("damp with cold rain"), her plate Hungr (Hunger), and her knife Sullande. Hel is not cruel, merely inevitable. When Hermóðr came to beg for Baldur's release, she agreed to free him if all things in the world wept for him — but when Þökk (Loki in disguise) refused, she kept Baldur in Helheim.
