Names & Heiti

Hlér Gymir Ægir
Ægir (Old Norse: Ægir) is a powerful jötunn and personification of the open sea. He dwells in a hall beneath the ocean and is renowned for his lavish feasts for the gods. It is in Ægir's hall that Lokasenna unfolds — where Loki insults each of the gods in turn. Ægir is married to Rán and has nine daughters who personify the waves of the sea. Thor fetched the enormous cauldron for Ægir's brewing from the giant Hymir. Ægir is regarded as neutral between gods and giants — more host and force of nature than enemy.
